The “Female Filmmakers Festival Berlin”

celebrates its fourth edition from Oct.5-9, 2022 at Kino Moviemento

The “Female Filmmakers Festival Berlin” is back for its fourth edition from October 5-9, 2022 at Kino Moviemento

The audience is going to see a variety of features, short films and music videos of all genres from around the world, showcasing a carefully selected selection of solid fiction and documentary features, paired with strong, handpicked short film programs around the themes of identity, intimacy and self-discovery. In total the festival will screen films from 22 different countries.

All films will be screened in their original version with English subtitles, following Q&A’s with international, as well as local directors and film crews.

The opening film “Ramona” is a true indie gem in the style of “Frances Ha” straight from Spain, directed by the talented Andrea Bagney. This romantic comedy tells the story about an actress in Madrid, who meets an older man with whom she seems to have an instant connection. Scared of her feelings, Ramona runs off, only to discover that Bruno is the director the ambitious actress was supposed to meet at the casting all along. “Ramona” will open the festival on Wednesday, October 5th at 7pm at Kino Moviemento, followed by a reception in the Kino Moviemento lounge.

The short film program "Breaking Free”, right after the opening film, will take the audience on a journey of characters that couldn’t be more different from each other. However, all protagonists are connected by the strong desire to finally break free. This program starts at 9.30pm at Kino Moviemento.

The second festival day starts off with short films from the Ukraine, Turkey, Australia, China, USA and Belgium, discovering and questioning the theme identity. This short film program will be screened at 7pm on Oct.6th at Kino Moviemento.

At 9.30pm on the same day, French director Sylvia Gautier presents her latest masterpiece “Bright Women” (“Brillantes”), which is not only the Germany premiere, but also the only chance to see the film before it will be released in the cinemas next year. Torn between being true to herself, or lie to protect herself and her family, protagonist Karine faces a moral dilemma.

On Friday, October 7th, the festival will host the Berlin premiere of the award-winning German tragic comedy “Everybody wants to be loved” (“Alle wollen geliebt werden”) by Katharina Woll- in attendance of the director and crew. Protagonist Ina wants to please everyone. But then everything changes from one moment to another on this hot summer day, she definitely won’t forget.

This German cinema highlight will be followed by an emotional short film program called “Intimacy”, showing protagonists from Italy, Germany, Russia and Italy in their most intimate and fragile moments.

The festival weekend is going to start at 5pm on Saturday, October 8th with more German cinema- the feature debut “Charly” by the up and coming newcomer director Alisa Kolosova, who will be available for a Q&A after the screenings.

Saturday night is all about strong, thought-provoking documentaries. “Room Without A View” by Roser Corella explores the exploitative working conditions experienced by migrant domestic workers hired under the Kafala system in Lebanon. By combining a multitude of perspectives, the film offers intimate insights into the private lives of employers, agents and maids. Exposing modern forms of slavery, it also reflects on the role of women and domestic work at large in capitalist societies.

“Sisters in Longing”- from Latvian director Elita Kļaviņa will celebrate its Germany premiere on Oct.8th at 9.30pm. This eye-opening documentary portrays a group of women, who are bonded by their pain, longing, and their current residence – a semi-open prison for women. While staging Anton Chekhov’s play, Three Sisters, together with professional actors, imprisoned women reveal their harrowing life-stories, dreams and the longing for a decent life outside the prison walls.

On the last festival day on Sunday, October 9th, the festival is proud to present the European premiere of the American indie gem “This is a film about my mother” by Tess Harrison, who will fly in from the USA to present her film in person.

Filmed in the cold gray palette of Ithaca, New York, real-life brother and sister Tess and Will Harrison play fictional siblings Eve and Max. The film gently explores the space between childhood and adulthood as the older sister Eve calls upon her younger brother Max to help her make a documentary about their mother, who made a name for herself as a children’s book author and illustrator.

The closing short film program on Sunday, October 9th at 7.30pm will show a unique mix of some of the festival’s most popular categories: Environmentally-themed films meet fashion + music videos meet experimental films. The majority of directors and crew will be there for an extensive Q&A afterwards.

This year’s festival edition will close with the Germany premiere of the Serbian documentary “It’s good to be me” by Zlatko Zlatkovic & Duska Latas at 9.30pm on Sunday, October 9th. “It’s good to be me” explores the art of photography, but also tells the touching story about how the love of photography brought two seemingly incompatible people together. As part of this program, this year’s winners will be announced and the best short film, as well as the winning music video will be screened once more.

The film program will be completed by a virtual panel on Friday with the Pitch & Public Speaking Coach & Consultant for industry professionals Bonnie Williams, who specializes in supporting international speakers in finding their own voice and speaking with impact. This session will serve as a warm up for the in person networking event for film professionals on Saturday, Oct.8th at 4.30pm at the Kino Moviemento lounge.

All tickets can be purchased either on the Moviemento website or directly in the cinema.
