Jess is a young woman living in a rural community who has fallen in love for the first time. She hasn’t told family and friends because her first love is also a woman. When Jess learns that her secret lover has committed suicide, Jess keeps her grief to herself, fearing being mocked, judged or disapproved of by her family, but desperately needs to express her feelings. In the short space of a meal time, Jess’s grief ferments and turns inward, culminating in a violent act of self-harm, the only voice that she can give to her emotions.
